The kingdom of Marshovia is so small that one of its richest citizens, Madame Sonia (Jeanette MacDonald), is responsible for paying more than half of its taxes. British Air Force pilot Peter Carter (David Niven) is on his way home to England from a World War II bombing mission in a badly damaged aircraft.
