Bank robber Graham Dorsey spends a few hours with beautiful widow Amanda Starbuck, in which time his gang takes part in a disastrous holdup. Learning of his comrades' demise, Dorsey goes on the lam. Believing her short-term lover was killed by the law, Amanda decides to make the most of having had a liaison with the supposedly deceased desperado by writing a book about him. Much to his confusion, the still-living Dorsey watches as his name becomes legendary.

Mangas Coloradas (Lex Barker), an Apache chief, and white trader Luke Fargo (Ben Johnson) are bound by friendship and their mutual love for Riva (Joan Taylor), a Mexican-Native American girl rescued from horse thieves. Riva marries Mangas, who teaches her the warrior's ways, and she later warns the Apaches of an ambush by white soldiers. When Fargo, who did not intend an attack, is injured, Riva helps him -- a kindness he must choose whether or not to return when war with the Apaches erupts.

A Mexican aristocrat (Michael Pate) dies leading troops against his half brother's rebels (Jock Mahoney) in old California.

Young Jeff Blaine (Joseph Stafford) is being raised by his Aunt Ruth (Ellen Drew) because his absentee father, Nate (Dane Clark), is an outlaw. When Nate suddenly shows up, hoping to get custody of Jeff, Ruth opposes the idea, and forces Nate to flee by framing him for a robbery. Years later, the adult Jeff (Ben Cooper), who never forgave Ruth for her deception, begins to search for his fugitive father, and becomes an outlaw himself when he engages in an ill-advised stagecoach robbery.

Bat encounters a judge up for reelection in Headstone, Texas, and bets on an exhibition fight.

Bat bungles an attempt to thwart stagecoach robbers, resulting in the disappearance of precious silver bullion and the stagecoach itself.
