A waitress in the Warner Bros. cafeteria, Judy Adams (Doris Day), is picked by actors Jack Carson and Dennis Morgan to star in their next picture. Master Chef Chu (Sihung Lung) is semi-retired and lives at home with his three unmarried daughters, Jia-Jen (Kuei-Mei Yang), a religious chemistry teacher; Jia-Chien (Chien-Lien Wu), an airline executive; and Jia-Ning (Yu-wen Wang), an employee at a fast-food joint. Life at the family's house revolves heavily around preparing and eating an elaborate dinner every Sunday. The stability of these meals gives them all strength as they deal with new romantic relationships and disappointments.

On their way to an afternoon on the lake, husband and wife Andrzej (Leon Niemczyk) and Krystyna (Jolanta Umecka) nearly run over a young hitchhiker (Zygmunt Malanowicz). In Milos Forman's satire on Communism set in a small Czechoslovakian town in the 1960s, the local firemen decide to organize a ball, however the proceedings are dogged by difficulty at every step. They plan to organize a beauty pageant at the ball, yet struggle tremendously to find enough pretty contestants. A lottery is planned for later in the evening, but the guests begin stealing the prizes. Then, inevitably, there is a fire in the town... It seems that whatever can go wrong, does go wrong.

Starting out as a musician working at a New York City café, Romberg quickly becomes one of the most successful composers of Broadway musicals, operettas and film scores in the early 20th century. His rise is charted through many musical numbers from his best-known works, such as "The Student Prince," "The Desert Song," and 'Rosalie," many of which feature an all-star cast of MGM performers.

Helen Morgan (Ann Blyth) is a singer and dancer working at a carnival. Larry Maddux (Paul Newman), a bootlegger, recognizes her talent and agrees to promote her, and the two begin a tumultuous romantic relationship. Through his conniving ways, Larry propels Helen to stardom. She lands a starring role in a hit Broadway musical, "Showboat," and later maintains a residency at her own nightclub. But, when she realizes Larry is only with her for her money, Helen succumbs to alcoholism.

Running between 1907 and 1931, the Ziegfeld Follies were elaborate stage revues mounted by the great Broadway showman Florenz Ziegfeld, inspired by the Folies Bergères of Paris. In 1945, film producer Arthur Freed recreated the lavishness of Ziegfeld's shows with this all-star revue, consisting of comedy sketches and song-and-dance numbers featuring MGM Studios' musical comedy stars including Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, Lena Horne and Red Skelton.
