Two-part documentary telling the story of Harry Birrell, one of Scotland’s most prolific 20th-century film-makers. The first episode takes us back to before the WWII, where Harry’s journey with film began. He captures in vivid detail his army training at Hamilton Barracks and Dunbar as he and the troops prepare for battle. On his return from war, Harry turns to the Scottish mountains for his next adventure, as he becomes an active member of the fledgling Scottish ski scene and records his alpine adventures.
2025-12-02 23:15:00
Harry's personal documentaries filmed from the 1950s onwards, including a water-skiing competition on Loch Earn, the last days of the Glasgow tram service and the Queen's state visit to George Square. The footage is intercut with the films he made with his children as they grew up in the 50s and 60s, portraying a universal experience that is nostalgic and deeply poignant.

In the fictional town of Burnistoun, the legend of King Arthur springs to life when a Burnistoun man pulls the magic sword Excalibur out of the pavement. Meanwhile two punters enjoying a lock-in at the pub find their enjoyment eerily curtailed by the arrival of the pub's ghost, the Wee Baldy Man. Identical twins Dom and Tom Thoms allow us a peek into their lives where their tendency to finish each other's sentences isn't helped by the fact they are often talking at cross purposes. Regular characters McGregor and Toshan, the self-styled 'quality polis' team, finally get their come-uppance at a disciplinary interview with their boss, while Burnistoun's failed entrepreneur Alex Ciderson reveals how a family tragedy led to his latest misguided invention. Finally, one of Burnistoun's local football teams, realising it has uglier fans than its rival, decides to sign some good-looking foreign fans to improve the look of the terraces.

Just four designers remain to fight it out for a place in the semi-finals. Arriving at Michelle’s studio, they are split into teams of two and given their next challenge - the redesign of two cafes in the seaside town of Margate. The finished venues need to attract both daytime and evening crowds, so the key to the task is delivering multifunctional spaces, with each team member taking ownership for their own zones. Before heading to Kent, the teams get a steer from their new clients via a Zoom meeting. One team learns that they must channel a cool Caribbean vibe, with their cafe also doubling up as an evening venue that hosts gigs and DJs. The other team has a seafront cafe, whose owners are looking for a design that avoids seaside cliché but has a welcoming vibe that matches their ambition to provide reasonably priced food for the whole community. Two different businesses, but for the designers the same goal - to take a step closer to winning the biggest commercial contract of their lives. Assisting Michelle this week is guest judge Ross Bailey. CEO of AppearHere, he has an in-depth knowledge of what makes small hospitality businesses sink or swim.

The story of the extraordinary friendship between Scottish film-maker Bill Douglas and his lifelong companion and collaborator Peter Jewell. Bill Douglas was Scotland’s finest director. In his short career, he made four films: autobiographical trilogy My Childhood, My Ain Folk and My Way Home about his appalling childhood, and Comrades, an epic about a momentous moment in English history. Bill is celebrated by other great film-makers such as Lynne Ramsay, Lenny Abrahamson, Satajit Ray and Yuliya Solntseva. Bill's life was transformed when he was on national service in the Egyptian desert and met Peter Jewell, the man who would become his lifelong friend. The two men had very different backgrounds, but they formed a unique bond that channelled a tremendous creative energy. In this film, Peter reminisces about the life he shared with Bill in their tiny Soho flat filled with cinema memorabilia. Their love of the movies leads them to start experimenting with an 8mm camera. Peter’s memories and musings about the legacy Bill left behind are illustrated with these never-before-seen short films.
